Licensed: Cosmetology Exam · Last updated: September 2, 2026

Licensed is a study app for the cosmetology state board licensing exams in the United States. It contains original practice questions across the ten subject areas of the content outline published by the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC), thirteen full-length timed practice tests that follow the official per-area question split, a scored test for each subject area, a free question of the day, and a free guide explaining how the written and hands-on examinations are administered.

Licensed is an unofficial, independent study aid. It is not affiliated with NIC, with any state board, with any test administration company, or with any textbook publisher.

Write in English or Spanish — both are read. Please include which iPhone you are using and which iOS version, if the question is about something not working. Expect a reply within two business days.

There is no phone line and no chat. One person reads that inbox, and every message gets an answer.

I paid, but the content is still locked

Open the app, tap More at the bottom right, then tap Restore purchases. That asks Apple whether this Apple ID already bought the package and unlocks it again.

Use the same step after reinstalling the app or moving to a new iPhone. Your purchase belongs to your Apple ID, not to the phone, so you never pay twice.

If it still does not unlock, email rafael@orejita.com and say which Apple ID region you buy from. Do not send your password — nobody will ever ask you for it.

Is it a subscription?

No. It is a single purchase that never renews and never expires. There is nothing to cancel.

I want a refund

Purchases are processed by Apple, not by us, so refunds go through Apple. Sign in at reportaproblem.apple.com with the Apple ID that made the purchase, find the item, and request a refund there. Apple decides those requests; we are not able to issue refunds on their behalf.

What is free and what is paid

Free, with no purchase and no account:

  • 30 practice questions — three from each of the 10 subject areas, each one with its full explanation
  • One scored diagnostic that shows which subject areas you are weakest in
  • A new question every day, the same for everyone, which never repeats within a year
  • The entire “How the exam works” guide

The one-time purchase unlocks the full bank of 1,737 questions, all 13 full-length timed practice tests, and a scored test for every subject area, with no limit on attempts.

How do I read it in Spanish?

Tap More at the bottom right, then choose the language. Everything is available in both English and Spanish — the interface, the exam guide, and all 1,737 questions with their explanations. You can switch at any time, and your progress is kept.

Does it work without internet?

Yes. Everything is stored inside the app. The only moment it needs a connection is when you make or restore the purchase, because that step talks to Apple.

Which exams does it cover?

Thirteen full-length practice tests, all built on the NIC content outline for cosmetology:

  • 8 Theory tests: 100 scored questions in 90 minutes each.
  • 5 Written Practical tests: 65 scored questions each.

Each test is fixed — Test 4 is always Test 4, so you can finish it, retake it and compare your score — and no two tests in a series share a single question.

Each one draws exactly the number of questions per subject area that the official outline specifies. The two outlines are not the same — on the Written Practical, nail care rises from 10% to 20% of the exam and skin care from 10% to 15%, while scientific concepts drop from 35% to 20%. The app follows each one separately.

The hands-on practical examination cannot be practised in an app. What the app does give you, free and without a purchase, is the full breakdown of its ten timed sections, the rules that fail candidates who know the work, and what the bulletin says you must bring.

What passing score does the app use?

75%. That is a placeholder, and the app says so. NIC writes the examinations but does not set the passing score — each state board does, and it publishes the number in its own candidate handbook. Wisconsin, for example, requires a scaled score of 75.00. Check your own board and treat 75% as a floor.

Does my state even use the NIC exam?

Not every one does. California uses a national examination developed by PSI and dropped its hands-on practical entirely in January 2022. New York writes its own written and practical exams. Others use the NIC examinations directly. The subject matter overlaps heavily in every case — infection control, anatomy, chemistry, hair, skin and nails — but check with your own board before you assume the format.

I think an answer is wrong

Tell us. Email rafael@orejita.com with the question — a screenshot is enough — and it will be checked against the public source it cites. If it is wrong it gets fixed in the next update, and you get an answer either way, with the source, explaining what that source actually says.

Accessibility

The app follows the text size you set in Settings > Display & Brightness > Text Size, including the accessibility sizes. It has a full dark mode that follows your system setting. Right and wrong answers are marked with an icon as well as a color, so they can be told apart without relying on color.

If something in the app is hard for you to use, write and say so. That feedback gets acted on.

Deleting your data

Your progress is stored only on your iPhone. Deleting the app deletes it. Nothing of yours is held anywhere else, because nothing is collected. See the privacy policy for details.

This app is an independent study aid. It is not official and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC), any state board of cosmetology or barbering, any test administration company, or Milady, Cengage, Pivot Point or any other publisher. All names of examinations and organisations are used only to describe the exam this app prepares for.
